Because she has pleasant memories of the Rettenbach Glacier, Maze felt that Sölden was the most appropriate place for a press conference during which she could share her thoughts and wishes. Sölden was where the Slovenian champion embarked on the road to her greatest successes; this is where she earned her first points and where she won her first race. “After so many years in Alpine skiing, I must express my satisfaction with everything I have achieved. I no longer feel the need to compete at this level,” Maze said at the opening of the press conference. The conference room at the Bergland hotel was completely full. The press conference was attended by numerous journalists, television crews, as well as by members of Maze’s “Team to aMaze” and her family.
Maze said that she enjoyed taking part in the Meribel race two seasons ago. Even though she lost the competition for the overall Crystal Globe to Anna Veith – then still named Fenninger --, she knew that she gave it all she had. That’s why she wants to compete one last time on the highest level – in front of faithful fans at home in Pohorje, even though she hasn’t yet announced which discipline she wants to compete in. “Because I did not have enough time, space, or energy at the time to imagine that it could have been my last race, I’m really motivated now. I want to race in front of my fans. I want to give my sponsors, my friends, the team, and journalists another top performance,” Maze added.
