23-year-old Peter Prevc paved the way to his eight win among the ski jumping elite in the first series, landing at 139.5 m and outdoing the nearest pursuer, Richard Freitag from the German team, by seven metres. Peter’s brother Domen was third (133.5 m).
In the final series, 43-year old Japanese veteran Noriaki Kasai stayed in the lead after his 134-metre-long jump for quite some time – up until Domen Prevc, who also landed at the 134-metre mark and took over the lead. The next jumper, Freitag, failed to beat either of the two. Finally, Peter Prevc yet again proved that he’s currently the best ski jumper of the World Cup. Another excellent jump (134.0 m) put him 14 points ahead of his brother, who stood on the (solo) winners’ podium for the first time in his career.
Peter Prevc: Analysis helped
“My yesterday’s jumps were not very good. We analysed them and determined what had gone wrong. I jumped very well today and with confidence. I hope this continues. Of course, I’m also glad that my brother Domen stood on the podium, too,” explained Peter Prevc immediately after the win. Last year’s winner, the German ski jumper Severin Freund, took eighth place, which means that after six competitions of this year’s World Cup Peter Prevc is the leader in the grand total and has a 105-point advantage to the German. Domen has already climbed to eighth position.
Janus: Old shoes were apparently the right choice
“It was a pleasure to watch the last few jumps from the coach stand. I don’t know what to say. A historic moment, first time in the Cup’s history that brothers have won first and second place. Congratulations to Peter and Domen for excellent jumps. Peter tried on new shoes on Friday and then switched back to the old ones, which was apparently the right choice. What’s also interesting is that Noriaki Kasai, who was third, is 43 years old, and if we subtract 16 years, Domen’s age, we get quite an interesting number,” noted Goran Janus, the coach of the Slovenian team, about the historic double crown of Prevc brothers. “Jurij Tepeš and Anže Lanišek were also quite good, even though they made mistakes in the finale. Engelberg has a specific ski jumping hill, and if the ski jumper fails to catch the right moment to jump, they can’t fly far. I hope things will improve on Sunday.”
