After a good week I was lying in a hospital bed after a successful surgery," is Jože Režek's story. Mr. Režek is one of the ambassadors of the SVIT program.
After last year's experience Jože Režek started helping out in the promotion of the state screening program, Svit, and the early detection of precancerous changes and colorectal cancer.
According to figures colorectal cancer is the second most common cancer in Slovenia. Last year the Svit program, fully financed by the Health Insurance Institute of Slovenia, invited 253.355 people aged between 50 and 69 to take the tests. Tests were then given out to around 252.000 people, while 137.801 people returned the tests. That means that 56,64 percent of the invited population was screened, which is less than what the experts expected. On the basis of the findings doctors then performed 7.932 colonoscopies and detected cancer in 159 cases. 1887 people had progressive adenoma, which presents a high risk of developing cancer.
"The Svit program is one of the best programs we've had in the last decade. It's one of the most successful and quality programs which can improve the public health of Slovenians," says the head of the Svit program, Jožica Maučec Zakotnik.
