After the session Janković told the journalist that his decision wasn't final. "It is what I wish. I like and enjoy this work, and I have the best possible co-workers. People of Ljubljana are nice. I was very clear in explaining what I am waiting for," he said, and added that only executive positions agree with him.
His decision depends on the situation in politics
"After discussing the topic with my team at the city hall, and in the party, I will make my final decision. But it is my ambition to run again for the mayor of Ljubljana." Janković didn't mention when his decision would be made. But he confirmed that it depended also on the state politics.
He ate his words
Thus he denied his own words that the final decision of his running for the mayor of the capital would be announced to the public on the Victory Day. At the beginning of the ceremonial session of the city council, which ended just before 2 pm with the song ‘Hej brigade’, Janković said differently: "Nobody thought I was following my vision, and my ideals. I am old enough to say it. We are actualizing an idea - the most beautiful city in the world - which Ljubljana actually is. The Slovenian society could also be the best society in the world; nobody could convince me that the people in other countries are smarter, or more capable. We only need to unite," was his explanation of his candidacy. He added: "I won't lie to people if I fail."
The reasons for his candidature for the president of PS Party
In his celebratory speech Janković explained that he didn't run for the president of PS Party at the congress because of his ego; not because he wished to salvage the family budget, nor to improve his situation regarding police investigations, as his political opponents claim. He said again that the reasons for his candidature for the president of PS Party were the government economic programme which needs to be replenished, and the bad bank which is, in his opinion, the biggest abuse of the Slovenian economy.
Already in the beginning of the month Janković said that eventual snap elections in June would not influence his decision regarding his candidature for the mayor of Ljubljana in either way.
Running for the mayor of Ljubljana for the fourth time
If he indeed decides to run for the mayor of Ljubljana, it will be his fourth time. The first time he won the elections for mayor in 2006, and he was re-elected in 2010, when he won almost 65 percent of the votes in the first round of the elections. In December 2011 he was elected a member of parliament, and had to renounce as the mayor, and in March 2012 he was again elected at the by-election.
Damjan Damjanović will be his rival
Damjan Damjanović, Director of the Slovene Philharmonic, has already announced his intention to run for the mayor of Ljubljana at the autumn local elections.
