The Los Angeles Kings, with Anže Kopitar as one of their key players, won the NHL championship title for the second time in three years. As the first center choice of the L.A. Kings, Kopitar will have the honour of having the precious Stanley Cup, one of the oldest sports trophies in the world, in his possession for one day.
"The Holy Grail" of ice hockey already paid a visit to Kopitar's home town of Hrušica in the summer of 2012. Fans and ice hockey lovers then had a chance to see it live and up close. This year's open day with the Stanley Cup trophy moves to the legendary Podmežakla Arena in Jesenice, where Kopitar first began to play organized ice hockey. A special surprise, expected to arrive from Los Angeles, is also announced for the day.
"The Lynx" from Sochi also expected to arrive
Due to the well-known issues in Jesenice, the renovated arena doesn't enjoy real professional ice hockey anymore. But on Sunday it will be a place where fans will be able take pictures with the Stanley Cup trophy (beginning at 5 p.m.). Before that Slovenia's best ice hockey player will answer questions from fans and also welcome his team mates from Slovenia's Ice Hockey Olympic Team, which won a historic seventh place at the Olympic tournament in Sochi. The evening will end with an organized watching of the football World Cup final match between Germany and Argentina, which will then be followed by a concert.
