Last year the majority of those convicted, or 8.046, were men. There was a similar ratio between men and women in the previous years as well. The situation regarding minors is also similar. An analysis into the decisions of prosecutors and court rulings reveals that 282 young men and 37 young women were sentenced last year. The analysis was done by the Statistical Office of Slovenia.
In most of the cases, individuals were sentenced for theft and large theft. Among the 9.410 convicts, 2.241 were sentenced for those two crimes. 932 people were convicted of frauds, 675 for drug trafficking, 589 people for the forgery of documents. 426 people were sentenced for causing minor bodily injuries, while 400 people were convicted of domestic violence.
2013 was an exceptional year
The Statistical Office stresses that one has to be cautious when comparing the 2013 and 2014 figures. In 2013 a total of 11.321 people were convicted, which was an exception. The number of those sentenced was for a third higher than the year before. In May 2012 an amendment of the Criminal Procedure Act came into force and introduced pre-trial hearings and agreements to a guilty plea. This ensured greater cost savings for the procedures.
In 2012 the number of sentenced minors, adults and legal entities was 8,838. Compared to 2014, the figures point to an increase in the number of convicts.
More economic crimes
In the last five years, the number of those sentenced for economic crimes increased considerably, for both physical and legal entities. In 2010 only six legal entities were sentenced for economic crimes. Last year the number was 45.
Most often, in more than a third of last year's cases, sentences were given out for business frauds, while in 22 percent of the cases sentences were given out for the violation of basic workers' rights.
