Based on studies about noise by the roads managed by Dars, data on the quantity and structure of traffic as well as data that indicated a large number of lorries, the highway management company has suggested that the infrastructure ministry should take action.
During this week, traffic signs that ban good vehicles weighing more than 3.5 tons from overtaking, have been installed across the entire ring.
Aim: to decrease noise levels
From 2nd April heavy goods vehicles will be banned from Ljubljana’s northern ring between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. Namely, the largest residential areas along the ring are concentrated in the north of Ljubljana.
Dars as the operator of Ljubljana’s highway ring and the Ljubljana Municipality expect the ban to divert heavy lorries that typically cross Ljubljana on their way from Štajerska to Primorska and vice versa to the eastern and southern parts of the ring, which would relieve the northern ring and thus decrease the level of noise.
Dars has already requested the police to tighten control over the adherence to new traffic rules, and will closely monitor traffic to examine the effects of the new traffic system.
