Makarovič said that the results were "a relative victory of the SDS party, and an absolute victory for the opposition". "The result also implies a non-confidence vote to the presently governing option as a whole". PS as the leading party of the government in control until recently even lost one MEP, and the government coalition as will have only one quarter of the Slovenian members in the European Parliament.
Pribac: Victory for the party with the convicted president
The final standings regarding the lists support were, according to Pribac, as expected. He finds it significant that the victory went to the SDS Party, i.e. a party led by the president who has been convicted by a final judgment, and the voters had several weeks on their disposal to reflect on the conviction. Nobody even mentioned that, as if it were completely normal, which it is not, emphasized Pribac. The biggest surprise for him was the fact that SD party "hardly managed" to enter the parliament. The exit poll shows that SD received 7.9 percent of votes, i.e. one mandate.
Pribac also finds significant the fact that the voters elected Tanja Fajon, and not Lukšič. This result will result in "political consequences for the Slovenian political scene", both for the SD Party and for its president Lukšič. If these results hold, Makarovič claims that will be "a severe personal defeat for the president of SD".
The left, or, as Pribac said, "the, conditionally speaking, left" paid the price for the partition. They have dug their own hole by the lists of candidates, claims Pribac. He considers the division of votes among the left-wing parties and lists "wasted potential of the left-wing electorate", which should be a lesson for the left for future elections, either local or state assembly.
Pribac: Poor prospects for the left at the parliamentary elections
The left-wing parties got a slap in the face, concludes Pribac, and warns that the elections for MEP took place on a "lovely summer day". If the parliamentary elections take place in July, the result will probably be quite similar. He believes the left-wing voters simply find a nice day too precious "to waste for the purpose of contributing to stability of political situation". "The young and the left have decided to enjoy in a nice day, and not to "waste it" by participating at the elections," added Pribac.
Makarovič: Downward trend has been noticed
Pribac said that the low participation was "relevant characteristic of these European elections, which was probably a reflection of the attitude of the Slovenian electorate towards the EU". This attitude is, in his opinion, connected to the threat of Troika, and to the fact that "the EU is considered the medium of globalisation, and neoliberalism, eating into social state, social justice, and the Slovenian people expressed this attitude by not going to polling stations".
There were only few Eurosceptics among the candidates. Pribac places among them Zmago Jelinčič and Jože Mencinger, neither of them elected. Voters simply expressed their Euroscepticism by not voting.
Makarovič commented the low participation as well: "Generally speaking, voter turnout is in decline, it is a present trend. The same will happen at the state assembly elections, but still a substantially better turnout can be expected than at the European elections," he said.
