"The support is exceptional, for which I am grateful to you. I am aware of the responsibility that you have conferred upon me. My responsibility is to make sure every voice will be heard and that nobody will be neglected. Our commitment must be to work for the benefit of the people and the homeland. We are all representatives of the people, so we have a duty to talk to one another and, above all, to work for the benefit of Slovenia. The search for differences usually leads to problems, and the search for common ground to solutions," said the new president of the National Assembly after the announcement of the voting results. "I understand today's election as the first step towards stabilizing the political sphere in Slovenia. When it gets real, Slovenian politics is capable of finding a solution, even in a way that goes beyond the bloc divide," stressed Tonin when taking office.
Matej Tonin's candidature for the president of the parliament was filed by 50 members of the parliament with the first signatory Marjan Šarec (LMŠ). He explained that this is a coordinated proposal signed by LMŠ, SMC, SD, DeSUS, SAB and NSi. "I can say that this is the outline of the future coalition as we want it to be: a central coalition that looks into the future and not in the past. So I think that Tonin is a suitable candidate who focuses on the future," Šarec explained before the vote regarding the decision.
