Every year the three-day event attracts thousands of participants who walk or run along the 35-kilometre circular route around Ljubljana to celebrate its liberation from the occupation during World War II.
Saturday’s programme also included a three member team run in two versions. The teams can choose between the distance of 12.5 or 29 kilometre run and the membership or veteran category. This year, 1,618 teams opted for the shorter distance, while 259 teams ran the longer version of the track. Additionally, teams of students from primary and secondary schools participate in the 3,000-metre run.
The walking part of the "March along barbed wire" was first organized in 1957. It takes the participants on a nearly 35-kilometre trip around Ljubljana, where a barbed wire fence was put up during the Second World War by the Italian and, later, German occupiers; this is where the name of the event comes from. In addition to marking the liberation of Ljubljana (9 May 1945), from its very start the main goal of the event has been to promote recreation and a healthy lifestyle.
