The sculpture - which the Slovenian worshippers believe to have special significance - will set off to a pilgrimage, visiting parishes across Slovenia.
That the statue would begin its pilgrimage at Brezje is no coincidence, since the basilica in this small settlement in northwestern Slovenia is a national pilgrim temple. The temple's provost, Robert Bahčič, has expressed the wish that "Mary, who comes from Fátima, would connect all Slovenians just like Mary the Helper from Brezje".
Mary of Fátima has arrived to Slovenia as part of 100th anniversary celebrations of Virgin Mary's apparitions at Fátima. Archbishop Stanislav Zore argues that the timing for her arrival is more than fitting due to current events abroad and in Slovenia. "This is why I hope Mary's visit will bring new awareness about our responsibility for the people around us, our responsibility for what they do, and also our responsibility for our homeland."
The statue of the Virgin Mary of Fátima will conclude its pilgrimage across Slovenian parishes on 13 October.
