The government has sent amendments to the defence act into parliamentary procedure to facilitate control of the inflow of refugees. The amendments were discussed by the MPs at the extraordinary session of the National Assembly.
After five-hour discussion the amendments to the defence act were adopted by the National Assembly with the required two-thirds majority, giving additional powers to the Army at protection of the national border. The soldiers will be authorized to warn, direct and temporarily restrict the movement of persons, as well as engage in crowd control.
The Army will follow the same rules as the Police. The duration of the powers will be limited and will last as long as necessary, but no longer than three months, with optional extension.
PM Miro Cerar left the decision on the time the amendment of the Defence Act would enter into force to the National Assembly, which is an autonomous legislator.
