Mramor stressed that his decision was based on strictly personal reasons; he's returning to his academic career. He said that this was not an overnight decision, and that his resignation had been a long time in the making. He also rejected speculation that his decision was connected with State Secretary Metod Dragonja, who also wishes to resign from his role.
Mramor considers the stabilization of public finances and reforms in the management of the public sector to be his greatest achievements, and adds that he does not perceive any major failures. “The past 22 months were extremely difficult, but the results are fantastic,” Mramor said when summarizing his term as minister.
Smerkolj will serve as a temporary replacement
The Prime Minister said that he has already informed the National Assembly about Mramor's decision, and that the ministry will temporarily be taken over by the Minister of Development, Strategic Projects, and Cohesion Alenka Smerkolj. “Work will continue as usual and there will be no changes to the overall strategy of this government – a strategy that is clearly defined,” Cerar added. He stressed that he will begin the talks to select Mramor's successor later today, while the formal replacement is planned for late August or early September.
Dragonja drew attention to controversial actions at the Port of Koper
The State Secretary at the Finance Ministry Metod Dragonja, who was criticized in connection to the Port of Koper controversy and was the subject of several calls for his resignation, said yesterday that he is considering his resignation but that he has not yet made up his mind.
Dragonja was criticized mostly for his statements at a meeting of the National Assembly’s Committee for the Oversight of Public Finances. At the meeting, he used outdated data to argue about the insufficient profitability of the Port of Koper's capital, even though the figures had improved in the meantime. He later apologized several times for his statements, but he added that he still believes that the dividend yield at the Port of Koper could be higher.
The State Secretary, who is in charge of managing public investments, has also drawn attention to what he perceives as controversial practices at the Port of Koper, and was criticized for his statements.
