The number of students enrolled in higher education has been diminishing for several years, but still almost one half of all 19- to 24-year old young people in Slovenia study, which places our country among the leading countries of the EU. The number of freshmen is diminishing as well, as in the 2015/16 academic year 15,300 students enrolled, which represents a drop of almost 5,000 from five years earlier.
Chancellors satisfied with quality
Considering the funds allocated for higher education, the quality of the study at the Slovenian universities remains high, as chancellors assured, according to the Radio Slovenia journalist Nataša Lang. Comparable foreign university have at their disposal four times more funds per student – e.g. the University of Graz with 11 to 12 thousand euros per student compared to 3,500 in Slovenia, but all are present on the same market, emphasizes the University of Maribor chancellor Igor Tičar. He draws attention to the fact that the Slovenian universities are listed among the top 500 universities amongst the 25,000 universities in the world, which is in his opinion an exceptional achievement considering the available funds.
