‘The NK Maribor management team was not officially informed about the sports director’s departure, which is why we are unfortunately unable to comment on the press reports and unofficial information,’ wrote Željko Latin, the public relations officer of the Maribor club.
The newspaper Ekipa SN wrote that Zahovič had made an irrevocable decision to leave the club and that he had announced his decision to the management before the match with Gorica. Today Zahovič went on a short holiday.
Cracks in the relationship between Zahovič and some of the leading men in the club emerged after a press conference following the match with Krško. At the press conference, the sports director verbally attacked a journalist and was suspended for six months by the Football Association of Slovenia. Zahovič was also suspended by the club, but his suspension was later cancelled. It seems that things are no longer idyllic. It has been rumoured that Zahovič and coach Milanič are no longer on the same wavelength.
We will soon find out how this issue will unravel. The Maribor team starts with its preparations for the new season on the 7th of June.
Zahovič has been the club's sports director since 2007. During his term, the Violets won seven national championship titles. The club played in the Championship League group stage twice. The club has a contract with Zahovič until the year 2024.
