27 years ago, most of the United Nation Organisation member states signed a Convention on Children's Rights, according to which all children have the right to decent and healthy life. Yet a number of children live in adverse conditions, which make that impossible. The data that a percentage of children in Slovenia at risk of poverty is increasing is worrisome; the deprived children suffer the consequences also later in life. A lot more must be done to assure better future of children.
We are mostly familiar with an idyllic image of Slovenia, but the truth is that there is more and more poverty, also in families where parents have jobs. Anita Ogulin from the Association of Friends of Youth said: "When a family lives in a cold flat, without heating, and there is no electricity, children can't even fulfil their school obligations, not to mention lack of other things, and are in a very difficult position."
According to statistics, in the last five years there are more and more children at risk of poverty, or social exclusion. It is very difficult to break from the vicious circle, and the consequences of social distress linger, and affect the personality of adults, TV Slovenia reported.
