The 24-year-old Slovenian national team player, who played very little in Borussia, will now return to the "pharmacists" from Leverkusen where he began his career. The transfer is said to be worth 10 million euros, which is two million less than what Borussia paid to get him from Salzburg. The midfielder signed a contract to play for the club until the year 2020.
Coach Schmidt knows Kampl very well
"Kevin is an excellent football player who will bring much joy to the club. I know him very well. We had a nice period together in Salzburg. I've been wanting to get him since last winter and I'm really happy that we have now succeeded in signing him half a year later," is what Bayer's coach, Roger Schmidt, told the club's website about the transfer.
"I'm really happy to return to Leverkusen, where I made my first important steps as a football player in the club's under-23 team. To now be able to play for the club's first team in the Bundesliga and Champions League is wonderful," said Kampl at his official presentation.
"Kevin Kampl is a very versatile player. He's fast and has a great quality in finding his teammates and making passes. For us this contract opens many opportunities. We're very happy that he decided to sign for us," is what Bayer's director of sports and former legendary German national team player, Rudi Völler, had to say about the transfer.
Kampl failed to score a goal for Borussia in the 19 official matches he played for the club. Borussia's coach Thomas Tuchel has recently been counting less and less on Kampl, as there is already great competition for the midfield position in the club. Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Shinji Kagawa are playing excellently at the start of the season, which Borussia started great (two victories in the German Bundesliga and qualifying for the Europa League group stage).
A return to his home club
The 24-year-old Kampl was born in Solingen, Germany. Between the years 1997 and 2009 he played for Bayer Leverkusen's youth teams. He then played for Bayer's B-squad, but never got a real chance to play for the first team (he only played once in an unimportant Europa League match against Metalist from Kharkov). He was then sent on loan to Greuther Fürth. In the summer of 2011 Kampl moved to Osnabrück, where he became the team's best player. In the summer of 2012 he moved to Aalen, which played in Germany's second league. He played only three matches there. Salzburg from Austria then offered three million euros for his transfer. Kampl started to shine playing for the red bulls and later also became one of the key players in Slovenia's national football team.
