In 1922 in Šoštanj Partisan poet Karel Destovnik Kajuh is born. He died in an attack by German soldiers near Žlebnik. He wrote the poetic collections Markacije and Pesmi.

In 1986, Soviet nuclear physicist Andrei Sakharov, 1975 Novel Peace Prize winner, is released from exile in Gorki. Due to a disagreement with the arrival of Soviet troops in Afghanistan he was exiled to Gorki.
In 1996 Italian actor Marcello Mastroianni dies.
