the German priest Martin Luther is born. Luther became a seminal figure of a reform movement in 16th century Christianity, subsequently known as the Protestant Reformation He sent to the University in Wittenberg his 95 theses for scientific discussion.

In 1759 Friedrich Schiller, one of the greatest poets and playwrights, is born. He was friends with Goethe. He mainly wrote about the ethical responsibilities of art.

In 1819 Žiga Zois, Slovene poet, critic and translator, dies. The mineral Zoisite is named after him.

In 1888 Russian aircraft designer Andrei Tupolev is born.

In 1918, an armistice is signed, which meant the end of the First World War.

In 1925 Richard Burton, American actor, is born. He became famous for his theatre performance of Shakespeare's Hamlet, and then in film Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? He was married five times, twice to actress Elizabeth Taylor.

In 1962, Polona Dornik, one of the best basketball players in Slovenia, is born. In 1988, she played with the Yugoslav team and won silver at the Olympics in Seoul.

1973 - Elton John takes the top spot on the American albums chart with 'Goodbye Yellow Brick Road'; on the album is also the hit 'Bennie and the Jets'.
1979 - The Eagles with their song 'Heartache Tonight' take the No. 1 spot on the American singles chart.
1984 - Chaka Khan with his song 'I Feel For You' takes the top spot on the British singles chart. The song was originally written by Prince. Khan's version featured an all-star supporting cast including Stevie Wonder.
1986 – Falco with the song 'Coming home' (Jeanny Part 2) takes 2. Place on the German singles chart.
1990 - Mariah Carey's song 'Love Takes Time' climbs to No. 1 on the American charts.
