Fernando Magellan set sail from the port of Seville with five ships. He wanted to go round the world, which he managed with just one ship. Magellan was killed while in a skirmish with the natives on the island of Muktan. 18 members of his expedition returned to Spain after three years. This was to prove the assertion that the Earth is round and that the continent discovered by Columbus was not India.
