German socialist theorist Friedrich Engels is born. He was the father of the Marxist theory, alongside Karl Marx. In 1848 together with Marx he co-authored The Communist Manifesto, and later he financially supported Marx to do research and write Das Kapital.

1520 Portuguese sailor and explorer Ferdinand Magellan sails through a strait that cuts through the southern tip of South America connecting the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean. The strait was later named after him the Strait of Magellan.
