German socialist theorist Friedrich Engels is born. He was the father of the Marxist theory, alongside Karl Marx. In 1848 together with Marx he co-authored The Communist Manifesto, and later he financially supported Marx to do research and write Das Kapital.
In 1881 Austrian writer Stefan Zwieg is born. In the autobiographical novel The World of Yesterday he described the period before World War II.
1520 Portuguese sailor and explorer Ferdinand Magellan sails through a strait that cuts through the southern tip of South America connecting the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean. The strait was later named after him the Strait of Magellan.
In 1919 in England Lady Astor is elected the first lady Member of Parliament.
In 1944, at the Tehran conference Churchill, Roosevelt and Stalin meet. At the conference they coordinate their views and actions against the Axis powers.
