Edmond Halley, the English astronomer and head of the Greenwich Observatory is born. He discovered the proper motion of stars and calculated the tracks of 24 comets, including the track of Halley's Comet that was named after him. Halley's Comet has an orbital period of 76 years.
In 1793 in Paris the Louvre museum is opened to the public. Initially it was a castle belonging to the kings of France in Paris. During the French Revolution, it became a national museum for art treasures of the king's property.

In 1999, just four days before his 101 birthday the oldest Olympic champion Leon Štukelj dies. He was a legendary Yugoslav gymnast of Slovene nationality. At the Olympic Games, he won six medals - two gold medals in Paris in 1924, one gold medal and two bronze in Amsterdam in 1928, and a silver medal in Berlin in 1936, with which he concluded his career.
