Plasticised bales were delivered by lorries of the Publikus company, and at the same time an unbearable stench started to spread from that area. The locals immediately informed the competent municipal services, inspectorates and the police. Due to fear of self-ignition or deliberate burning of waste, from which a suspicious gas may also be spreading, a night-time fire watch has been organized for the last few days at the waste site. The villagers also founded a civil initiative at a protest meeting, which has the task of stopping the import of unwanted rubbish and achieving the removal of the already delivered bales of waste.
The Municipality of Domžale immediately sent municipal inspectors to the suspected landfill and invited the CEO of Publikus to a meeting. He assured the municipality that there were no hazardous waste at the site, and that the company would stop transporting bales.
In a press release, Publikus reported that they bought the land near the Študa biogas plant because they wanted to build economic infrastructure there, which the company is allegedly allowed to with a certificate on land use. Since the investment has not yet been designed, they decided to arrange a temporary depot of bales with light fractions there. They materials are supposed to be non-hazardous but have additionally been wrapped in foils to prevent any unwanted emissions into the environment. Due to citizens' concerns, the management of Publikus decided that they would temporarily stop the delivery of bales until they have coordinated with the inspectorate and the local community.
The Slovenian Environmental Inspectorate informed TV Slovenija that the inspection process is already in progress, which is why they cannot give any statements at the moment as to whether the suspicious landfill is a threat to the population and the environment.
