According to his office, Pahor "supports the diplomatic recognition of Palestine in circumstances where this recognition would help to settle bilateral issues with Israel rather than aggravate them". The president estimates that "at this moment we have not witnessed such circumstances", Pahor's office said.
According to the President, the common foreign policy of the European Union should be more ambitious and influential than in the past when it comes to a peaceful resolution of the Middle Eastern issues. Pahor emphasized that the EU had already proven its expertise and influence when reaching the nuclear agreement with Iran.
In his personal conversations with leaders of the Israeli and Palestinian authorities, the President is striving for both sides to accept the so-called 'solution of the two countries', where Israel and Palestine would live side by side in peace and security.
Pahor: There has been a loss of trust
Pahor believes that recently the situation has worsened and harmed trust. If the international community gave strong and unanimous support, a solution would be possible. Therefore, he is reluctant to take unilateral measures that do not improve the situation but merely fuel mistrust, informs the President's office.
Pahor thus responded to the suggestion posed by Foreign Minister Karl Erjavec that Slovenia should recognize the state of Palestine in the current circumstances. The main cause for the proposal is the decision of US President Donald Trump to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, which has greatly angered the Arab world and especially the Palestinians, who also want to declare East Jerusalem as the capital of their country.
