Pahor addressed the MPs at the extraordinary session at which the draft of the proposal to government regarding the situation in the Slovenian Army was discusses. Pahor also said that Slovenia is a relatively safe country, but the task of the politics is to find a balance of measures for safe development.
The modernisation of the national security system due to changed international safety measures is a task which must not be postponed, Pahor emphasized. The task of the state politics is to find the adequate balance of measures for safe development or for durable recovery of economy on one side, and modernisation of the national security system on the other side.
Pahor, who as the President of the State acts also as the supreme commander of the Armed Forces, estimates that Slovenia is not under direct military threat. Yet it faces great security risks due to the deterioration of the security situation in the EU's neighbourhood, the worsening of Russia-NATO relations, and the magnitude of the humanitarian refugee crisis.
He believes that the exposure is still manageable, but cautions that the unpredictability of political and safety processes in Europe and in the world is of such nature that relying on the adequacy of the present ability of the security system would constitute an irresponsible risk.
Pahor singled out the human factor as a positive circumstance. The members of the Slovenian Armed Forces are highly motivated at performing their tasks, especially in the international environment, at protection and rescue, and in their support of Police, he stressed.
