The investment is worth 16 million euros. The terminal is to be completed by spring of 2020.
The owner of Fraport Slovenija, the German branch of Fraport, will expand the terminal to accommodate 22 check-in counters; there will be five lines for security check-up and new luggage sorting facilities. The modernisation will bring Ljubljana on a par with the neighbouring airport, including the one in Zagreb.
The Ljubljana airport welcomed 1.4 million passengers in 2016. So far this year’s traffic growth is up-and-coming, explains Fraport Slovenija’s managing director Zmago Skobir: “Currently the outlook is a 20 percent growth year-on-year, new low-budget airlines have started operating from here, Adria Airways also have quite good results, especially from connecting the East and the West through Ljubljana.”
According to long-term predictions for the next 30 years, the average number of passengers is expected to rise by a good three percent per year.
