Mr. Vilfan was driving under the influence of alcohol when he hit a pedestrian. He said he deeply regretted the incident, and that he visited the injured patient in hospital. The 84-year-old pedestrian suffered a fractured arm and several bruises.

Mr. Vilfan, who is also a sports commentator and former basketball player, admitted that he had one beer too many, and that stepping down as MP was the responsible thing to do.
