Nataša Jazbinec Seršen, head of the Environmental Protection Department at MOL, explained that this was a project the people eagerly awaited. Many have already been spending time by the Sava River in this area but it had been particularly dangerous. Flow of the Sava River is very fast in this section, and has been constantly carrying away parts of the bank.
"Our first goal was not really a beach but putting the bank in order, by restoring it into a stable condition," she explained.
The beach arrangement project thus included the rehabilitation of the Sava riverbank, the regulation of water access and the installation of concrete sunbathing platforms. In addition, access to intervention vehicles has been built. According to Jazbinšek Seršen, this was a very demanding project. Among other things, because the site belongs to the Natura 2000 protected area, it is subject to very strict rules and restrictions. For this reason, the slopes were re-built with the so-called Carniolan wall representing the traditional way of watercourse management.
Water quality in Sava is relatively good
In this regard, Jazbinšek Seršen emphasized that they arranged the Sava Beach, but not as a swimming site. In order to obtain the status of water suitable for swimming and bathing in, which is awarded by the Ministry of the Environment, very strict rules apply. She added that, in order to obtain the status of bathing water in the future, the quality of water in the area will be monitored.
"The quality of the water in the Sava River is relatively good and fits the standards for bathing waters most of the time, but this is not enough for the status of bathing waters," she warned and expressed belief that the beach would be very well visited.
