The door to what has dubbed "a students' paradise" on Kardelj Square was opened by 59 student clubs with a traditional parade led by majorettes from Sevnica.
The festivities then spread to the entire site and to club stands, which, according to the organizers, serve as the very heart of the market.
The clubs are grouped by region, which gives visitors a chance to sample culinary specialties from various parts of Slovenia: from "bograč" goulash to Bela Krajina and crackling "pogača," to a potato dish called "grenadirmaš," Carniolan sausage, Karst prosciutto, Idrija "žlikrofi" dumplings, and other specialties. Meanwhile, foreign students offer their dishes in the "international island."
Competitions and other activities are held on the main stage, where a concert will take place later this evening. The event will feature rock groups such as Tabu, Siddharta, and Prljavo kazalište.
