According to a police representative speaking at a press conference, residents of the border town of Žejno reported the presence of an unknown person at about 11 a.m. The man was wandering around the village and asking for work. At around 11:45 a.m., a police patrol consisting of two officers found the man sitting by the side of the road. One of the officers approached him in order to identify him. The unidentified man then swung his knife and stabbed the officer in his chest. The severely wounded police officer received immediate medical attention and was transported to the hospital, but he died two hours later.
The suspect, a 22-year-old German citizen, ran about a hundred meters away from the scene of the attack and took his own life. He used the knife to stab himself in the chest, hitting his heart, according the police representative. The tragedy is a rare example of a lethal attack against a police officer in Slovenia.
“Such events are now apparently happening every year, and I'm afraid that things will only get worse,” said Radivoj Uroševič, the president of the Slovenian Police Labor Union. He stressed that today's event is evidence that the work of police officers cannot be compared to the work of civil service administrators. Asked if police officers have all the necessary equipment to prevent worst-case scenarios, Uroševič stated that equipment can do little to prevent devious attacks such as the one that happened today.
