The goal of each of the two police unions is to negotiate the best possible deal for the police officers, said Marjan Šarec when asked about the strike at this year's Third Age Festival. He insisted that the government would seriously consider the unions' demands.
When asked about the claim that the police officers began their strike because they had received no reply in two weeks, Šarec insisted that the government was not ignoring them.
Several other groups in the public sector are also waiting for their strike demands to be resolved. The government has formed a bargaining group and negotiations will continue.
According to the head of the police union Radivoj Uroševič, the strike, which the officers began this morning, is proceeding without complications. He added that the officers do not wish to jeopardize the security of the Slovenian people with the strike. When asked whether the strike would result in fewer fines for traffic violations, Uroševič responded that the officers will make such decisions based on the dynamics of the negotiation process.
The goal of the strike, which is the fourth in the past six years, is the establishment of the pay scale that was agreed upon after a strike in mid-2016. Back then, the two police unions reached an agreement with the government that raised the police officers' wages. However, a plan to reduce wage anomalies later brought other public sector positions into higher pay grades.
The police unions are also demanding bonuses for each year served, compensation for being on standby for action at all times, a reassessment of the prohibition on political party membership, and the elimination for anomalies in the retirement process for officers.
