Prostate cancer is the second most lethal type of cancer among Slovenian males. The treatment depends on the stage, the extent, the histologic form of cancer established by biopsy, and on the age and general condition of the patient. Borut Gubina of the urology unit of the surgery department of UKC Ljubljana at the press conference emphasized that the disease mostly afflicts men aged between 50 and 60. At that age people are usually mostly involved in their work and family, and often pay too little attention to their health. Yet the disease can develop in younger people as well, the experts warn.
Gubina said that prostate cancer is often considered a slowly developing disease, and not too hard on the patients. Yet in most cases it is not so. The newest modern methods are required for efficient treatment, the most effective treatment for the locally limited prostate cancer being radiation therapy, and surgical removal of the prostate.
