Ilirska Bistrica has been facing problems for years. The road linking it with the rest of Slovenia and Croatia is disastrous, there is no highway and there is not going to be one for now and the state is taking one public institution after another from the municipality. The final straw was the adoption of new rules that will, from 1 September onwards, prevent candidates for a driver's license from taking the exam in their home municipality.
People from Bistrica have this weekend, in sign of protest, been signing a petition against the adoption of the new rules for examination centers.
