The new regulation will demand registration, insurance, and technical roadworthiness test of the motor-driven cycles. The novelty is also the mandatory use of helmets – for regular bikes until the age of 18, and for mopeds with the top speed of 25 kilometres per hour.
It is a known fact that in last years mopeds, or motor-driven bikes became very popular among the young. Officially the speed should not exceed 25 km/h, but with some changes of the motor, and by removing the speed blocking device these bikes turned into actual motorcycles. Nova Slovenija party was the first to express wish to stop that practice, but the coalition rejected their proposal, and prepared their own.
The mandatory use of helmets will bring some changes as well. The age limit for cyclists will be pushed from 14 to 18 years, and for motor-driven bikes with the maximum speed of 15 km/h the use of helmets will be mandatory; the riders will be free to use either crash or cycling helmets.
