Tina Trstenjak joined the ranks of Olympic champions of summer Olympic Games; since the declaration of independence of Slovenia the summer Olympic gold medal was won by the double scull rowers Iztok Čop/Luka Špik, the shooter Rajmond Debevc (Sydney 2000), the athlete Primož Kozmus (Bejing 2008) and the judoist Urška Žolnir (London 2012). The sailor Vasilij Žbogar won a silver medal, his third at the Olympic Games, and also Peter Kauzer became an Olympic vice-champion in whitewater kayaking. Ana Velenšek contributed her part to the huge success of the Slovenian judo team by winning a bronze medal.

The Rio Olympic Games were the second most successful for Slovenia by the number of medals won; the Slovenian athletes brought home more medals only from Beijing eight years ago. Bogdan Gabrovec didn't miss by much when predicting six medals: in 200 metres race the kayaker Špela Ponomarenko Janić remained behind the medal winners only by one stroke. The judoist Adrian Gomboc was also close to winning a medal; the handball national team faced the Danes, the subsequent Olympic winners, in quarter finals, and the disqualification after one of the regattas was fatal for the sailing team Tina Mrak/Veronika Macarol...
