The turnout was 93,2% and 95% of those who turned out to vote opted for an independent Slovenia. In 2006 the government added another name to the bank holiday, calling it not only Independence, but also Unity Day, as Slovenians were never more united than on that day.
The referendum was one of the highlights of the democratic change happening at the end of the 80s and beginning of the 90s.
