The government is looking into publishing a tender for awarding a highway concession to a foreign investor. The country's highway company Dars has debt problems amounting to almost EUR 3bn.

Awarding a highway concession to a foreign company would reduce the debt and speed up the renovation of Slovenia's highway network. However before that it will have to solve property issues on the coastal highway, as a small part of it is under private ownership.

DARS manages 600km of highways and expressways across the country.
