15. August marked one of the main religious holidays in Slovenia, the celebration of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. Thousands of people turned out for mass all around the country with main pilgirmage sites at Brezje and Ptujska gora.
Assumption is one of the oldest holidays celebrating Mary. Many Slovenian churches are dedicated to her. On the eve of Assumption Day, a procession of boats also carried a painting of the Virgin Mary from the medieval coastal town of Piran to the nearby village of Strunjan.
