In addition to Kozole's work the festival, which takes place between 13 and 21 September, brings a retrospecive of films directed by Aleksander Sokurov, a Russian filmmaker, to the silver screen. Kozole is also scheduled to give a lecture to students in Vienna on Tuesday. The retrospective of his work focuses on the period from the year 2000 onwards, and includes his internationally acclaimed works Delo osvobaja (Labour Equals Freedom), Rezervni deli (Spare Parts) and Slovenka (Slovenian Girl).
This is the second time a retrospective of Kozole's films has been screened abroad. In 2005 the American Film Institute, located in Washington, organized a retrospective of his work in the USA and Canada – screenings took place in numerous places across North America, from New York to Boston, Chicago and Vancouver.
Having received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the international film festival Medfilm Fest in Rome last November, the Vienna retrospective is another recognition of the international reputation the Slovenian film director has gained abroad.
Mama Europe in Vienna
The Vienna festival has listed six films as contenders for best documentary, including the Slovenian film Mama Evropa (Mama Europe) directed by Petra Seliškar. The documentary has already been presented at the Sarajevo and Prizren film festivals, and is due to be shown at the prestigious Rotterdam film festival in January 2014.
