At the beginning of the school year Stanka Setnikar Cankar, Minister of Education, Science and Sport emphasizes the importance of study in assuring the adequate competences and knowledge of the future graduates in a highly developed society.

At that occasion she announced her intention to introduce new directions into higher education legislation which will allow quality development of higher education, and give to the young the opportunity by turning their diplomas into more than just a piece of paper. This year the number of students is smaller than three years ago by almost 10 percent.

Almost 12,000 freshmen admitted by the first deadline
This year 11,947 students were admitted into the first year of study by the first deadline, and 3,478 by the second deadline. On the websites of the higher education registration offices of the universities, and on websites of higher education institutions on the first day of the school year the data on vacancies for admissions by the third deadline will be published.

The universities in Ljubljana, Maribor, Koper and Nova Gorica, and other independent higher education institutions have 20,871 openings for full-time and part-time study in the current academic year, i.e. 695 less than the year before.
