The beginnings of Slovenian military aviation go back to 1918 when the Ljubljana and the Maribor units were established on 14th and 15th of December. They were under the command of General Rudolf Maister’s units. Slovenians have left their mark in the history of aviation. In November 1909, only a few years after the Wright brothers made their flight, The Rusjan brothers accomplished their first flight in 1909 with their plane EDA1. From the beginning Slovenians played also an important role in military aviation as Slovenian air units were quite strong during World War I.
Today Slovenia still has its military aviation. Its main aim is to support units of the Slovenian army at home and abroad and they operate within the System of Civil Protection and Help and Rescue.
