On Tuesday, the parliamentary foreign affairs committee and the parliamentary defence committee held a session behind closed doors. The Foreign Minister, the Defence Minister and the Chief of the General Staff also attended the session, but they did not release an official statement after the meeting.
However, TV Slovenia has learned that they agreed to step up Slovenia’s involvement in the fight against IS. Up to 15 Slovenian military instructors are to be deployed to Iraq. They are to be stationed in Erbil, the capital of Iraqi Kurdistan.
TV Slovenia’s sources said that these Slovenian instructors would only offer military training to local security forces. Slovenian troops have already participated in similar missions in Afghanistan and Iraq.
The Slovenian government is expected to give the go-ahead to the plan on Wednesday. On Thursday, Prime Minister Miro Cerar will attend a Syria Conference in London. At the conference, Cerar will pledge 200,000 euros to tackle the crisis in Syria.
