Common Slovenian orchids, such as the green-winged orchid, are among the first to sprout in spring, typically on meadows. Their flowers do not seem similar to those on Slovenian window shelves, "but if inspected through a looking glass, one will notice that the flower is no less beautiful than the store-bought tropical ones in our homes," explains biologist Borut Kokalj.
Orchids come in all sorts of colours. A small area in the Škocjan Caves Park hosts as many as 20 species of orchidaceae. "When I was out on a walk one day, I discovered three different kinds, and this is when I developed an interest in them," notes orchid lover Dragica Kranjec. Wild orchids are under special protection in Slovenia and are prohibited from being plucked.
