Slovenian students scored 513 points on average in the science literacy test, which is more than the OECD average which stands at 493 points, said the national PISA coordinator Mojca Štraus from the Educational Research Institute, which is carrying out the study together with other Slovenian schools. From all the other European countries only students in Estonia and Finland recorded better results in science literacy.
Slovenia’s students also recorded significantly higher results than the OECD average in math literacy. The OECD average is 490 points, while Slovenian students scored 510 points and have thus proved to be not that different from their peers in the Netherlands, Denmark, Finland, Belgium and Germany. The only countries with better results than Slovenia in math literacy in Europe are Switzerland and Estonia.
Big progress in reading literacy
In the past the weakest field of knowledge and skills for Slovenian students was reading literacy. The results of Slovenia’s students in this field were always below the OECD average.
However, the collected data for 2015 shows that reading literacy has improved since 2012 by 24 points. The Minister of Education, Science and Sports, Maja Makovec Brenčič, assessed the report as very good. Last year the average score of Slovenia’s students in reading literacy jumped to 505 points, which is now above the OECD average (493 points).
