1.7 million people were eligibile to vote at more than 3.300 polling stations. Voters were electing their mayors and local council representatives in 212 municipalities.
In those municipalities where neither candidate won a majority of votes, a second round of voting is scheduled for the 19th of October.
An election blackout has been in place since Saturday, and all political propaganda was forbidden until the polls closed at 7pm.
