As a response to this tragic event, competent institutions that promote road safety warn that measures related to the presence of alcohol and other prohibited substances in traffic should be tightened. The time period around St. Martin’s Day is traditionally considered one of the most problematic in the year from the point of view of traffic safety, so the police and municipal traffic officers will intensify their activities next week.
Slovenians still underestimated the effect alcohol has on their driving abilities too often, argues the Traffic Safety Agency. As long as no visible and behavioural symptoms of heavy alcohol intoxication appear, such as stumbling around, double vision and slurred speech, we are certain that we can participate in traffic. However, from the very first glass, alcohol affects our ability to think and perceive, which reduces our ability to drive and react appropriately, especially in critical situations.
The purpose of the agency’s preventive campaign is thus to encourage people to have zero tolerance toward alcohol, drugs and psychoactive substances in traffic, emphasizes its director Igor Velov.
