The ideas for establishment of a Slovenian press agency go back to the end of the 80s, and they are closely connected to the beginning of the independent and sovereign Slovenia. The idea of a new agency which would act as a counterweight to the Yugoslav Tanjug of that time was supported by the first multiparty government, which also became the co-owner of the new agency. In the beginning the new agency got more support from foreign than from Slovenian media, especially from Italian, Austrian and Hungarian press agencies, remembers the first director of the STA agency Dejan Verčič; he explains that at that time news items were made only with the help of telephones and telefaxes.
As years went by, the technological development helped expand their offer. In 2006 STA Picture Service was established, and in 2009 the STA-R Radio Service.
