According to the Municipality of Ljubljana, the goal of the renovation is to increase the number of artist's workshops in Ljubljana and to preserve the legacy of the building for future generations.
Overlooking Tivoli Castle, the renovated Švicarija building will house a number of artist's workshops and exhibition rooms. The renovation is expected to be completed in 2017. The International Centre of Graphic Arts, located in Tivoli Castle, will be the custodian of the new facility, which will collaborate with many major galleries from the region and with the International Centre of Graphic Arts itself.
Meeting place for Ljubljana's crème de la crème in early 20th century
Tivoli Hotel - Švicarija was built between 1908 and 1910 to plans by the architect Ciril Metod Koch. It reached its heyday between 1910 and 1930 when it housed a pub and a café. It became a central meeting place for Ljubljana's elite. The hotel ballroom hosted many high-profile cultural events, and the "kmetska soba" ("rustic room") was a popular venue for artists to meet. After World War II, a number of artists set up their workshops in the building, and the hotel was turned into social housing.
