The Latin word "Adventus" means arrival. Christians acknowledge two comings of their Lord Jesus Christ; the first being when Jesus Christ first came to earth as a human, while his second coming is expected to take place on judgment day.

The Slovenian Bishops' Conference at the beginning of Advent noted, among other; that in addition to external and material preparation, this period also marks the spiritual preparation in the form of prayer, fasting and good works. Advent time, like Christmas, is also seen as a period of peace and is aimed at bringing members of families together.
