The Pyrenees are among the last areas at the south of Europe inhabited by European brown bear. It is estimated that the French part of the Pyrenees is home to approximately 25 bears, all of them originating from Slovenia.
Balou came to France in the summer of 2006. He was released into nature in complete secrecy due to the strong opposition by the inhabitants of the area, who had even closed several roads to prevent the bear's transport. By relocation of bears the French authorities wished to boost the population of brown bears in the area.
Balou died in the period between June 4 and June 6; more details will be known after the autopsy. Balou was identified by the red sign on its right ear, and the collar which has been found several metres higher.
